There is / There are   Hay  
       
  We use There is / There are to say that something exists (or does not exist). The real subject usually comes after There is/ There are. Usamos la estructura "hay...." para simplemente decir que algo existe (o no existe). El verdadero sujeto va generalmente después de "hay..."  
    Nota: en castellano es diferente. No hay sujeto. La oración es unimembre y lo que siga a " hay " es objeto directo  
                                                 
1) Use "There is" for singular nouns and things you cannot count.
 		 Use la forma "there is" -hay- con sustantivos singulares  y sustantivos incontables
 		  
  Examples: Ejemplos:  
                 There is a river in my town    

        

               Hay un río en mi ciudad, pueblo.

 

  
                 There is a ghost in this room....   

          

               Hay un fantasma en esta habitación

 

  
               There is an apple on the desk                   

 

                Hay una manzana sobre el escritorio

 
                 There is ice on the lake

 

                Hay hielo sobre el lago

 

  
                 There is oil on the pavement...                Hay aceite sobre la calzada  
       
2) Use "There are" for plural nouns; that is to say, we use there are with a plural subject.
 		 Utilice la forma "there are" -hay- con sustantivos en plural; lo que es decir, con un sujeto en plural....(objeto directo en castellano)  
  Examples: Ejemplos:  
                 There are two parks in my neighbourhood

 

                Hay dos parques en mi barrio

 

  
               There are 600 students in this school

 

                Hay 600 estudiantes en esta escuela

 
                 There are four windows in my room

         

               Hay cuatro ventanas en mi cuarto

 

  
                                                                                                       
3) To say the opposite, (the negative form of this structure), use isn't  (is + not)    or    aren't   (are + not)
 		 Para usar la forma negativa, y decir lo opuesto, utilice   isn't  (is + not)  o   aren`t   (are + not)  
   		 
  Examples: Ejemplos:  
                There isn't a telephone in the kitchen                No hay  teléfono en la cocina  
                There isn't  a balcony                No hay  balcón  
                There isn`t an orange on the table                No hay una naranja sobre la mesa  
                There isn't ice on the lake                No hay hielo sobre el lago  
                There aren`t chairs in my room                No hay sillas en mi habitación  
                There aren´t two pictures on the wall. Just one                No hay dos cuadros en la pared. Sólo uno  
       
4) To make questions, (to ask whether something exists or it doesn`t)  just change the order of there is and there are...... Para hacer preguntas, (preguntar si algo existe o no) sólo debes alterar el orden de ''there is''  and  ''there are''
 		  
  Examples:  Ejemplos:  
                 Is there a balcony in the flat?                ¿Hay balcón en el departamento?  
                 Is there a Post Office near hear?                ¿Hay un correo cerca de aqui?  
                                                                 Yes, there is                                                                 Sí, hay  
                                                                  No, there isn`t                                                                 No, no hay  
                Are there two telephone lines?    Yes, there are                ¿Hay dos líneas de teléfono?       Sí, hay  
                                                                  No, there aren`t                                                                 No, no hay  
       
5) To express the idea of quantity,  we usually  have to use "some"  and   ''any"  with there is and there are. This happens when we have to mention an unspecified amount of something, for example,  when we are using uncountable nouns.
 		 Para expresar la idea de cantidad, a menudo tenemos que usar some and any con there is and there are. Esto sucede cuando tenemos que mencionar una cantidad no definida de algo, por ejemplo con sustantivos incontables.
                  (algo, un poco, algunas, algunos etc)
 		  
  We generally use some for positive statements, and any for negative and interrogative ones.
 		 En general, usamos some para las oraciones afirmativas y any para las oraciones negativas e interrogativas.

                There is some water in the bottle                Hay algo de agua en la botella
